What Is A Zugzwang?

Zugzwang is a German word pronounced zug (like tug) zwang (like wang).

In chess, there is no ability to skip your turn.

So sometimes you may be in a situation where it’s your turn to move, but you really wish it wasn’t.

That is what a zugzwang is.

It is the feeling that you really wish it wasn’t your turn.
