Black has three responses to the Réti
1. Protecting the pawn
With either the c-pawn
Or the e-pawn
2. Take the c4 pawn
White will eventually recapture the pawn
For example, white could go Qa4+
And then take back on c4
3. Pushing the d-pawn
This gives black some space in the centre
